Overview

Yuexiu Park is the largest comprehensive park in Guangzhou, nestled in the green lungs of Yuexiu Mountain. Since the Ming Dynasty, it has been one of the Eight Sights of Guangzhou. Unlike those newly trendy parks, it feels more like an old Guangzhou resident who has seen it all, hiding two thousand years of stories within its hills and forests. The park is free to enter and covers over 690,000 square meters. The hills are not high but gently rolling, with lush trees and shimmering lakes. It offers both natural charm and cultural relics. When you enter through the main gate, you'll be greeted by the open Dongxiu Lake. Stroll along the lakeside, and you'll quickly feel Guangzhou's leisurely vibe. This park suits all visitors—those who want a relaxing walk, those interested in Guangzhou's history, and families with kids who want to see the Five Rams Statue. The whole park is like a museum without walls. Zhenhai Tower, the ancient city wall, and the Sun Yat-sen Monument are scattered throughout. A walk around feels like traveling through Guangzhou's past and present.

Highlights

The first must-see is the Five Rams Statue, located on Muke Hill in the park. It is the symbol of Guangzhou. The five rams have different poses, and the one in the middle holds a rice stalk in its mouth, looking up at the sky. According to legend, five immortals rode five colored rams down to Guangzhou and gave rice stalks to the people, and from then on there was no famine here. Standing in front of the statue, you can feel the city's simple wish for harvest and good fortune. The second is Zhenhai Tower, which sits at the highest point of Yuexiu Mountain. With red walls and green tiles, it is five stories tall, commonly known as the "Five-Story Tower," and now also houses the Guangzhou Museum. Climbing up and looking out, you can see the entire city of Guangzhou at a glance. The imposing aura of "calming the sea" truly lives up to its name. The third is the ancient city wall from the Ming Dynasty, right next to Zhenhai Tower. The mottled bricks are covered with moss, and it is the only remaining Ming Dynasty city wall in Guangzhou. When you reach out and touch it, you can feel centuries of history. These three spots form a line and are the essence of Yuexiu Park.

Stories

Regarding the Five Rams Statue, there is a legend that has been passed down for a thousand years. Long ago, Guangzhou was still called Chuting. One year there was a severe drought, and nothing grew. The people were so hungry they had to gnaw on tree bark. Then one day, five auspicious clouds drifted across the sky, and five immortals descended riding five colored rams, each ram holding a stalk of rice with six ears. The immortals gave the rice to the people and said, "May this city never know famine." Then they soared into the sky, but the five rams stayed behind and turned into stone. From then on, Guangzhou enjoyed favorable weather and abundant harvests. This story not only gave Guangzhou the nickname "City of Rams," but also became the optimistic and grateful spirit of its people. There's also a small detail: Zhenhai Tower is called the "Five-Story Tower" because of a folk saying: "Five stories, tower five, each story looks out to the sea." Although Guangzhou is now full of tall buildings, old Guangzhou residents still habitually call it the "Five-Story Tower," which sounds especially endearing.

History

The history of Yuexiu Park dates back to the Western Han Dynasty's Nanyue Kingdom, when Yuexiu Mountain was the imperial garden of Zhao Tuo, the King of Nanyue. In the Ming Dynasty, during the Hongwu era, Zhenhai Tower was built on the mountain to guard Guangzhou's feng shui and serve as a lookout tower. In the Qing Dynasty, it became a training ground for the Eight Banner soldiers and the site of forts, and remnants of fortifications remain from the Opium War. During the Republic of China era, after the passing of Dr. Sun Yat-sen, the Sun Yat-sen Monument was built on the hilltop, echoing the Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall. After the founding of New China, Yuexiu Park officially opened and, after many renovations and expansions, became the most familiar leisure spot for Guangzhou residents. You could say this park has witnessed every step of Guangzhou's transformation from an ancient Nanyue capital to a cradle of modern revolution, and then to a modern international metropolis. Zhenhai Tower has been burned down and rebuilt several times. The building you see now was reconstructed in 1928. Inside, the museum displays artifacts from Guangzhou from the Neolithic era to modern times, each telling the story of this city's past.

Culture

Yuexiu Park is a microcosm of life in Guangzhou. In the early morning, you'll see elderly men practicing tai chi under the trees, aunties dancing in the square, and others walking their birds in cages, hanging the cages on branches while the thrushes sing merrily. This is also an extension of Guangzhou's "yum cha" culture—many locals, after strolling through the park, head to a nearby teahouse for morning tea, enjoying a pot of tea and a couple of dim sum dishes, chatting until noon. On the stone benches in the park, you'll often see old men playing chess, with onlookers more anxious than the players themselves. That lively bustle is the true street spirit of Guangzhou. Every Spring Festival, Yuexiu Park hosts a grand lantern fair, with dozens of colorful lanterns illuminating the hills and forests in a dazzling display—a must-see for locals during the New Year. On regular days, Cantonese opera enthusiasts sing in the pavilions, their melodious tunes blending with the Lingnan gardens to create a unique charm. When you come here, you're not just seeing the scenery; you're experiencing the way of life of Guangzhou people.

Symbolism

Yuexiu Park is full of interesting symbolic details. The most famous is the Five Rams Statue, where each of the five rams has its own meaning: the big ram holds an ear of rice in its mouth, symbolizing a bountiful harvest; the other four surround it, representing the continuation of descendants and endless life. According to legend, five immortals dressed in colorful robes rode five colored rams and presented ears of rice to Guangzhou, which is why Guangzhou is abbreviated as "Sui" and also called the "City of Rams". The "Five-Story Tower" of Zhenhai Tower also corresponds to the Five Elements, and the name "Zhenhai" means to suppress floods, because Guangzhou is near the sea, and the ancients hoped this tower would hold back the tides and protect the area. In front of the tower there is a pair of stone lions: the male lion steps on a ball, and the female holds a cub, representing power and reproduction. The Sun Yat-sen Monument is 37 meters high, the same height as the roof of the Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall, symbolizing that the hall and monument are equal in height, commemorating Dr. Sun Yat-sen's ideal of "the world for all". As you walk through the park, behind these numbers and shapes are the simple hopes of Guangzhou people for good fortune, stability, and a rich harvest.

Art & Design

Yuexiu Park itself is a large-scale work of art. The Five Rams Statue was created by renowned sculptor Yin Jichang and others in 1959. The statue stands 11 meters tall and is carved from over 130 pieces of granite. Its form is robust and powerful, with each of the five rams having a distinct expression, blending realism with decorative style—it is a representative masterpiece of Guangzhou's urban sculpture. Inside Zhenhai Tower, the Guangzhou Museum houses a vast collection of calligraphy, paintings, ceramics, and bronze artifacts, many of which are works of the Lingnan School of Painting, such as those by Gao Jianfu and Chen Shuren, reflecting the school's style of "blending Chinese and Western, merging ancient and modern." The stone inscriptions in the park are also worth seeing, such as the "Ancient Chu Court" stone archway, whose vigorous calligraphy is the work of a Qing Dynasty calligrapher. If you're interested in folk crafts, the museum also displays Guangzhou colored porcelain, Guangzhou embroidery, ivory carvings, and other exhibits, each shining with the wisdom of Guangzhou artisans. As you walk through the park, whether it's the statues, inscriptions, or architecture, they all seem to silently tell the story of Lingnan art.

Architecture

The architecture of Yuexiu Park is represented by Zhenhai Tower, a typical Lingnan multi-eaved pavilion-style building. It is five stories high, with red walls and green tiles, upturned eaves, and a grand presence. The base is built of red sandstone, and the walls are thick, providing both defense and fire resistance, showcasing the wisdom of Ming Dynasty military architecture. The green glazed tiles on the roof glisten in the sunlight, contrasting sharply with the red walls, making it very photogenic. The layout of Zhenhai Tower is also deliberate. It faces south, with its back to Yuexiu Mountain and facing the Pearl River, symbolizing "calming the sea" to prevent disasters and bless Guangzhou with good weather. The adjacent Ming Dynasty city wall is a different style. It is built of massive red sandstone blocks, about six meters high, winding along the ridge. Although it is in ruins, the rugged sense of military defense is still strong. The Sun Yat-sen Monument, on the other hand, is a Western-style obelisk, 37 meters tall, with Dr. Sun Yat-sen's will inscribed on its body. It echoes the blue glazed tile roof of the Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall, reflecting the blend of Chinese and Western architectural aesthetics during the Republic of China period.

Nature

Yuexiu Park itself is a natural oxygen bar. The hills are covered with banyan trees, kapok trees, white orchids, and other Lingnan characteristic species. They stay green all year round. In spring, the kapok blossoms burn bright red, like clusters of flames, and it's the city flower of Guangzhou. Dongxiu Lake and Nanxiu Lake have calm surfaces, reflecting green trees and pavilions. Herons often fly low near the lakes, and occasionally you can see turtles basking on rocks. The most wonderful thing is the birdsong in the park. In the early morning, thrushes and bulbuls sing on the branches, more healing than any alarm clock. If you love plants, look out for the century-old banyan trees with their hanging aerial roots, like an old man's beard, and people always sit in their shade. In autumn, the bald cypress trees turn reddish-brown, reflected in the lake, giving the illusion of northern autumn scenery. The park has extremely high green coverage. Walking on the shaded paths, sunlight filters through the leaves, casting dappled shadows, so even in summer it doesn't feel too hot.

Modern Life

Although Yuexiu Park is ancient, it is also gaining new vitality. In recent years, the park has undergone smart upgrades, with electronic guide screens at the entrance where you can scan a code to listen to explanations, and it has added smart fitness equipment and 5G network coverage. At night, Yuexiu Park has a special charm; Zhenhai Tower and the Sun Yat-sen Monument light up with warm yellow lights, reflecting on the lake like an ink painting. The park also hosts modern cultural events like light art festivals and music festivals from time to time, giving the old park new ways to play. What attracts young people most is the Yuexiu Mountain Running Trail in the park, about 3 kilometers long with moderate slopes. Many runners use it in the early morning and evening, and you can pass by historical sites while running—this experience of traveling through ancient and modern times is rare in a city. If you like taking photos, the red walls, green tiles, and stone steps in the park are perfect vintage-style backdrops. Wear a cheongsam or hanfu, and you'll get a stunning shot with just a casual click.

Travel Tips

I suggest setting aside two to three hours for your visit. If you want to explore the Zhenhai Tower Museum in detail, plan for half a day. The best times are early morning or late afternoon. In the morning, the air is fresh and you can see locals doing morning exercises. In the evening, the setting sun turns Zhenhai Tower golden, making for beautiful photos. The park has multiple entrances. The main gate, near Yuexiu Park Station, and the south gate, opposite the Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall, are both convenient. Take Metro Line 2 to Yuexiu Park Station, exit B1, and you'll be there in a few steps. The park is free, but Zhenhai Tower, which is the Guangzhou Museum, requires a ticket costing 10 yuan. It's closed on Mondays, so check the hours before you go. A recommended route: enter through the main gate, first see Dongxiu Lake, then follow the mountain path upward, passing the Five Rams Statue, Zhenhai Tower, and the ancient city wall in order, and finally exit through the south gate, where you can conveniently visit the Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall on the way. Wear comfortable shoes; the hill isn't high but there are many steps. For photo spots: shoot from below in front of the Five Rams Statue to avoid crowds, use the small square in front of Zhenhai Tower to capture the whole building, and the vines on the ancient city wall create a poetic atmosphere. There are small shops and vending machines in the park, but options are limited, so it's best to bring your own water. In summer, there are many mosquitoes, so bring insect repellent.
