Overview

You're now standing on Nanjing Road Pedestrian Street, one of the liveliest streets in Shanghai. This pedestrian street starts at Middle Henan Road in the east and ends at Middle Xizang Road in the west, stretching about one kilometer. It's one of the earliest commercial streets formed after Shanghai opened as a port. Its predecessor was a lane called "Garden Lane," built in 1851. Later, as foreign firms and shops gathered here, it gradually grew into "China's No. 1 Commercial Street." In 1999, the government turned this section into a pedestrian street, banning motor vehicles and making it a great place for visitors and locals to shop and relax. The whole street has a blend of Chinese and Western styles—on one side are century-old buildings like Yong'an Department Store and Sincere Company, with classical columns and towers; on the other side are fashionable flagship stores, time-honored food shops, and huge electronic screens. Crowded by day and glowing with neon at night, it has a very distinctive Shanghai urban feel. Whether you're visiting Shanghai for the first time or want to revisit the charm of old Shanghai, this street is well worth a stroll.

Highlights

The first thing worth seeing on Nanjing Road Pedestrian Street is the "Golden Ribbon" sculpture at the west entrance and the golden copper strips on the ground. This golden ribbon stretches from Middle Xizang Road to Middle Henan Road like a winding river, engraved with Shanghai's historical place names and years. You can look down and find markings like "1843" and "The Bund," and feel as if you're strolling through time. The second highlight is the Yong'an Department Store building on the north side of the street. Its facade features elegant classical columns and balconies, and the tower on top is an iconic silhouette of the whole street. You'd better step across the street, look up at the details of the tower, and imagine that in the 1920s and 1930s, this was Shanghai's most fashionable shopping paradise. The third recommendation is to take the "ding-ding tram" sightseeing car on the pedestrian street. The ticket isn't expensive. You can slowly ride along, listen to the bell, and easily take in the whole street. It's perfect when your feet are tired.

History

The history of Nanjing Road begins with Shanghai's opening as a port in 1843. At first, it was just a country lane leading from The Bund to the racecourse. Because of the gardens along the road, it was called "Garden Lane." Later, as the foreign concessions grew, the lane was widened and extended, and in 1854 it was officially named "Nanjing Road." In the early 20th century, four major department stores—Sincere, Yong'an, Sun Sun, and Da Sun—opened here one after another, lifting Nanjing Road to the throne of "China's No. 1 Commercial Street." Back then, a popular saying in Shanghai was: "Visit Nanjing Road, go to Sincere Company." These department stores not only sold goods from around the world, but also introduced new attractions like elevators, amusement parks, and rooftop gardens, making them the most fashionable shopping destinations in China at the time. In 1999, the eastern section of Nanjing Road was turned into a pedestrian street. Vehicles were rerouted, pedestrians could stroll freely, and the old buildings were gradually restored, giving this century-old street new vitality.

Architecture

The architecture of Nanjing Road Pedestrian Street is itself an open museum. Along the street, a large number of eclectic-style buildings from the early 20th century have been preserved, and the most typical is the Yong'an Department Store Building. Its ground floor is an arcade-style colonnade, the upper floors feature Ionic columns and finely carved balconies, and at the top there is a Baroque-style tower that is very photogenic. The Sincere Company Building also has a classical facade, but it is simpler than Yong'an. The height and scale of these buildings were carefully designed, with shops on the ground floor and offices or residences above, forming a layout of "shops below, residences above." The pavement of the pedestrian street is also distinctive, laid with light-colored granite, with a golden copper strip embedded in the middle, which serves both as decoration and as a guide for pedestrian flow. The street is about twenty meters wide, and the height of the buildings on both sides is well proportioned to the width of the street, so walking here feels neither oppressive nor cramped, but rather lively and enclosed.

Modern Life

Although Nanjing Road Pedestrian Street has a long history, its modern vibe is just as strong. The facades of the tall buildings on both sides are covered with huge LED screens, constantly playing advertisements and light shows. Especially at night, the entire block is lit up by neon lights and electronic screens, like a flowing river of light. The pedestrian street has also seen the appearance of many "new species" — such as vending machines, smart guide screens, AR interactive games, and even robot coffee kiosks. In recent years, some old shopping malls have been renovated into trendy hangouts that young people love, such as Bailian ZX Creative Fun Field, which brings anime culture into this century-old street. This blend of old and new is exactly what makes Nanjing Road so charming: you can touch the foundations of old Shanghai while also feeling the most cutting-edge commercial vitality of contemporary China.

Travel Tips

I'd suggest setting aside two to three hours for Nanjing Road Pedestrian Street, and it's best to start in the late afternoon. That way you can enjoy the daytime bustle and then the night views. The metro is convenient. You can take Line 1, 2, or 8 to People's Square Station, and Exit 7 brings you right to the west end of the pedestrian street. Or take Line 10 to East Nanjing Road Station and use Exit 1 to step directly onto the street. If you want to avoid crowds, try to skip weekend and holiday afternoons. Wear comfortable flat shoes, because walking the whole street takes over an hour. For photos, the area around the "Golden Ribbon" sculpture in the middle of the pedestrian street is a great spot for street scenes and architecture. At night, for neon lights, you can stand at an intersection and use a slow shutter to capture traffic trails and light streaks. There are convenience stores and cafés along the way, so you can rest anytime. Keep an eye on your belongings, and watch your phone in crowded areas.
