Overview

Dapeng Fortress, located on the Dapeng Peninsula in eastern Shenzhen, was a coastal defense stronghold during the Ming and Qing dynasties, with a history of over six hundred years. It was built in the 27th year of the Hongwu reign of the Ming Dynasty (1394), mainly to defend against Japanese pirate raids, and is one of the best-preserved ancient cities in the Shenzhen area. The entire fortress covers an area of about 110,000 square meters, with walls made of brick and stone, and four city gates on the east, south, west, and north. Inside, the streets crisscross, and ancient residences, temples, and generals' mansions are scattered in a pleasing arrangement. There are no high-rise buildings here, only low tiled houses and stone-paved roads. Strolling through, you feel as if you've traveled back to the Ming Dynasty. The core appeal of Dapeng Fortress lies in its historical authenticity and military defense system, making it suitable for tourists who love history, culture, architecture, and those who want to experience a slow-paced life. Whether it's a family trip, a romantic getaway, or a solo visit, you can find joy here.

Highlights

The most worthwhile things to see in Dapeng Fortress are first the massive ancient city walls and the four city gates. Climbing up the South Gate Tower, you can look out over Dapeng Bay and imagine the soldiers keeping watch over the sea back then. The watchtowers and cannon platforms on the walls tell of the tense coastal defense. Next is General Lai Enjue's Mansion, the residence of a Qing Dynasty naval commander. The architecture is exquisite, and inside it displays relics of coastal defense, making you feel as if you can see the general's heroic bearing. Finally, there are the ancient streets, such as South Gate Street and Main Street. The residential houses and shops on both sides retain the style of the Ming and Qing dynasties, and the bluestone slab roads have been polished smooth by time. Walking here, every step is history.

Stories

About Dapeng Fortress, there is a widely told legend. It is said that the name 'Dapeng' comes from a divine bird that once protected the people here, and later turned into mountains, blessing the region with peace. Another story is about General Lai Enjue, who bravely fought against the enemy during the Opium War and achieved great military merits. His mansion is still preserved today, displaying his relics and battle maps. Locals often say that standing on the city wall, you can hear the sound of war drums in the sea breeze, as if the spirits of our ancestors are guarding their homeland. These stories give the ancient city more warmth and add a sense of imagination for visitors, as if traveling back to that era of flames and war.

History

The history of Dapeng Fortress goes back to 1394, during the 27th year of Hongwu in the Ming Dynasty, when the imperial court set up a garrison here to defend against Japanese pirates. It remained a vital coastal defense site through the Ming and Qing dynasties. In the Qing Dynasty, a large naval force was stationed here, and it was here that General Lai Enjue distinguished himself in battle, leading troops against the British during the Opium War. After the Republic of China period, the fortress gradually lost its military role, but the buildings survived. In the 1980s, Dapeng Fortress was designated as a cultural relic protection unit, and in 2001 it became a national-level one. In recent years, the government has carried out restoration and preservation, breathing new life into this ancient city and making it a key historical and cultural landmark in Shenzhen.

Culture

Dapeng Fortress is not only a military stronghold, but also a place where cultures blend. The Hakka people live here, bringing Hakka culture, such as enclosed houses, mountain songs, and unique cuisine. The coastal defense culture is also deeply imprinted in the city, with annual rituals to worship the sea god, praying for safety. Local residents preserve traditional customs, like dragon dances during the Spring Festival and dragon boat races during the Dragon Boat Festival, which are lively and exciting. Walking through the ancient city, you can feel a resilient and pragmatic regional character, a mark left by centuries of coastal defense life. Hakka delicacies like lai fen and stuffed tofu are also great ways to experience local culture. Eating and chatting at the same time helps you blend into local life.

Symbolism

The architectural layout of Dapeng Fortress is full of symbolism. The four city gates symbolize peace in all directions, and the thickness of the city walls represents strength and protection. The cross street inside the city signifies connectivity in all directions, and also hints at military flexibility and mobility. The threshold of the General's Mansion is very high, symbolizing a step-by-step rise in status. The stone carvings in the courtyard often feature auspicious patterns, such as bats representing good fortune and lotus flowers symbolizing purity. These details are not only beautiful but also carry the ancients' wishes for a better life, and reflect the faith and expectations of the coastal defense soldiers. For example, the orientation and number of the city gates are carefully considered, reflecting the concept of feng shui, allowing visitors to appreciate the wisdom of the ancients while enjoying the view.

Architecture

The architecture of Dapeng Fortress reflects the characteristics of a Ming and Qing coastal defense stronghold. The city walls are built with blue bricks and stone blocks, about 6 meters high and 4 meters thick, making them very sturdy. All four city gates have barbicans, which enhanced their defensive capability. The layout inside the fortress is cross-shaped, with main streets connecting the four gates, flanked by neatly arranged residential houses and government offices. The residential buildings are mostly in Hakka style, with gray tiles and walls, wooden carved doors and windows, simple yet practical. Larger mansions like General Zhenwei's Mansion are more exquisite, featuring courtyards and carved beams and painted rafters, showcasing the grandeur of official families at that time. The overall design of the fortress is both practical and beautiful, making it a model of ancient military architecture and an important physical resource for studying Ming dynasty coastal defense.

Travel Tips

It is recommended to spend 2 to 3 hours here. The best times are from 9 to 11 in the morning, or from 3 to 5 in the afternoon, to avoid the harsh midday sun. For transportation, you can take bus E11 or the Dapeng Holiday Special Line to the Dapeng Fortress stop. If you are driving, there is a parking lot, but spaces are limited on holidays, so it's best to arrive early. Currently, no reservation is needed, but it's a good idea to check official notices in advance. The recommended route is to enter from the South Gate, first climb the gate tower, then stroll along the main street, and finally visit the General's Mansion. For photos, the best spots are on the South Gate tower and deep in the ancient alleys, especially when the light is good. Wear comfortable shoes, bring plenty of water, and there are small shops inside the ancient city where you can rest. To avoid pitfalls: holidays are crowded, so try to avoid them; some areas are under renovation, so be careful. If you have extra time, you can also visit the nearby beaches, but the main attraction is still the fortress.
